France's Macron: Trump expressed willingness to provide Ukraine with security guarantees

The French president comments after the meeting between European leaders and Trump yesterday

Macron adds that Trump clearly ruled out Ukraine joining NATO during their meeting. However, he expressed willingness for the US to provide Ukraine with security guarantees as part of efforts to reach a ceasefire with Russia. For some context, NATO membership for Ukraine has been an impediment in getting any peaceful resolution with Russia. So, we'll see.

There is a sense that there has been a lot talked about in yesterday's call but without any real sense of concrete action plan. It feels like a case of "let's do this, let's do that" but when it comes to execution, it might be a whole other story. In any case, European leaders are also on holiday mood so it's tough to get any sense of urgency. Macron is commenting here from his summer residence in southern France.
