Major US stock indices close mixed with the NASDAQ marginally higher

• Big gains were given up in the major indices

The major US indices gave up solid early gains. At the close, the NASDAQ index did close higher and at a new record level.

The S&P and Dow industrial average however, are closing lower.

A snapshot of the closing levels shows:

• Dow industrial average fell -224.48 points or -0.51% at 43968.64
• S&P index fell -5.06 points or -0.08% at 6340.00.
• NASDAQ index rose 73.27 points or 0.35% at 21242.70.
• Russell 2000 fell -6.56 points or -0.30% at 2214.71 .

At session highs, the indices showed gains of:

• Dow industrial average +305.31 points
• S&P index +44.65 points
• NASDAQ index +238.73 points
• Russell 2000 +21.87 points
