South Korea posted a merchandise trade surplus of $6.51 billion in August, Statistics Korea said in Monday's preliminary reading.
That was shy of expectations for a surplus of $6.61 billion, which would have been roughly unchanged from the July reading.
Esports were up an annual 1.3 percent on year, missing forecasts for an increase of 5.9 percent and down from the 5.8 percent gain in the previous month.
Imports contracted 4.0 percent on year versus forecasts for an increase of 0.7 percent, which would have been unchanged from July.
