Nikkei reports on an interview with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

The United States aims to wrap up negotiations with nations still without formal trade agreements by the end of October, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in an interview with Nikkei Asia.

Bessent’s remarks were made on Thursday, reported over the weekend.
His comments follow the rollout of Trump’s sweeping new tariff measures earlier this week.

Several key partners — including Canada, Mexico, and Switzerland — remain in discussions as they seek to lock in more favourable arrangements, hoping to soften the impact of the new duties while preserving access to the US market.

The US administration is using tariffs as leverage to secure concessions in matters unrelated to trade in some instances.
